What Affects Awning Installation Cost in Malaysia?

Two awnings that look similar in photos can land at very different prices — and the difference is rarely arbitrary. If you understand what actually moves the cost, you can read any quotation intelligently and compare contractors on the same basis. Here are the factors that matter, in roughly the order they matter.

1. Roofing material

This is usually the biggest single variable. Polycarbonate sits at the accessible end; ACP (aluminium composite panel) costs more but delivers a flat, premium architectural finish; PU metal deck adds insulation against heat and rain noise; and laminated glass is the premium option, priced for both the material and the stricter structural support it needs. There's no universally "best" material — each fits a different priority, which is why we compare them properly in our material guide.

2. Size and span

Cost scales with covered area, but not linearly. Longer unsupported spans need heavier structural steel, deeper beams, and more engineering care — a wide car porch that keeps pillars out of the parking area costs more per square foot than a small side-lane cover, because the structure is doing more work.

3. Structural design

A straightforward lean-to on existing pillars is one job; a cantilever that floats without front posts is another. Curves, double tiers, and integrated features like skylight panels each add fabrication complexity.

4. Ceiling finish

An exposed underside shows framing, fasteners and wiring. An aluminium strip ceiling hides all of it behind clean lines — wood-tone, bronze or silver. It's an additional layer of material and labour, and it's also the single upgrade that most changes how finished the result looks.

5. Site conditions

Tight access, upper-floor installation, uneven ground, existing structures to work around, or old awnings to dismantle and dispose of — all add labour hours that a clean, open, ground-level site doesn't need.

6. Lighting and extras

Recessed downlights, LED strips, ceiling fans and wiring runs are common additions. As an ST-licensed electrical contractor, we handle this in-house rather than leaving you to arrange a separate electrician.

Indicative starting prices, per series

Given everything above, a single number can't describe your project exactly — but you shouldn't have to message us just to find out if we're in your range. Here's a starting point per square foot for each series, based on the base structure with standard roofing material. Think of these as a floor, not a quote: the figure your site actually lands on depends on the factors above, plus whatever you add on.

Classic Series — from RM 21/sq ft

The entry point, and the most common job we do: a straightforward polycarbonate or PU metal deck cover on a standard lean-to structure. No unusual spans, no cantilevers — the rate stays low because the structure isn't working hard.

Aluminium Ceiling — from RM 21.50/sq ft

This is priced as a ceiling finish on its own — either added under an existing awning or any other roof structure, or specified as part of a new build. The rate covers the strip panels and installation; it doesn't assume any roofing work above it.

Urban Comfort — from RM 23/sq ft

Built for the tighter footprints typical of terrace-house porches and balconies. The rate sits close to Classic because the spans are usually modest, but the detailing — trims, junctions, a compact structure that still looks intentional up close — takes more care than a wide-open porch does.

Minimalist Beam — from RM 40/sq ft

The jump from the entry tier reflects the finish standard, not just the structure: flat planes, hidden fixings and clean edges take more fabrication precision than a standard lean-to, even before you choose ACP over polycarbonate.

Skylight Series — from RM 50/sq ft

Laminated glass costs more as a material, and it also demands stricter structural support underneath it — safety glazing isn't optional, so the frame has to be engineered for it, not just strong enough to hold up polycarbonate.

Premium C Beam — from RM 53/sq ft

The highest rate on the list, for the same reason it's usually the widest span on the list: keeping pillars out of a generous porch means heavier beams, more steel, and more engineering — before ACP's premium architectural finish is even factored in.
